Year 1 Maths Autumn term

These are some activities to support the work your child is doing in Maths this term. Please feel free to ask or answer any questions at the bottom of the page.

Parents:
Use different maths functions(add, take away) to practise solving problems in real situations. Keep the numbers small to begin.

Share 10 biscuits between 2 dogs. How many each?

Which dominoes have a total of 8 spots?
Which others have double numbers?
Add them together.

Parents:
In Year 1 children need to understand that addition can be done in any order. Spend some time trying these with real objects till you are satisfied your child has grasped the idea

Adding in any order
2 + 3 = 5 and
3 + 2 = 5
5 + 1 = 6 and
1 + 5 = 6
4 + 3 = 7 and
3 + 4 = 7
(Use grapes, cherries, raisins, sweets - anything small!)

Making 10
Find different ways to make 10...use fingers or counters to help.
You can practise while waiting for the bus, in the car, at bedtime...

3 + 7

4 + 6

2 + 8

5 + 5
